Attendance and Leave of Absence

Attendance
It is extremely important that children attend school regularly and on time. This sets good habits and ensures that children do not miss out on vital elements of their learning programme. Parents are asked to notify the school with reasons for any absences, reminders will be sent if this is not forthcoming. Pupils are not expected to be absent for more than 5% of sessions in a school year. Parents will be informed on a termly basis of their child’s attendance figure. Where this is below 90% parents will receive care calls from the school following up absences if a clear reason is not forthcoming.

We do not expect parents to take their children out of school during term time unless there are exceptional reasons for doing so. The Secretary of State for Education is very clear that it is disruptive to a child’s education and does not promote good habits. The majority of parents are able to take their children away in appropriate holiday periods. However, we do recognise that for some parents with difficult working patterns, or in exceptional circumstances, this is not possible. In these circumstances a form is available from the school office (or can be downloaded from this section of the website) requesting leave of absence and should be filled in at least one month prior to any planned absence.
